The Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Arun Dhumal, has confirmed that the mega auction for the biggest franchise T20 tournament in the world will happen “for sure.” Notably, the IPL mega auction happens every three seasons, and since the last one took place in 2022, it is highly likely to occur once again in 2025.
Before the IPL 2022, there were two teams added to the tournament, namely Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans. It led to the mega auction in the IPL, which provided these two new teams the best possible opportunity to build their squads from the ground up.
Since then, in the two IPL seasons that followed, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans reached the playoffs stage on both occasions, showing the value of the mega auction to make the tournament interesting and expansive at the same time. Recently Arun Dhumal told Sportstar about the challenge IPL is facing this year due to the T20 World Cup in June. Dhumal said, " This time the challenge is that we are starting with the T20 World Cup in the first week of June, and we were planning to close the tournament by May 25 or May 26 as the team will have to travel to the US and that’s a different territory altogether."
In his interview with Sportstar, Arun Dhumal, the IPL Chairman, was asked whether the supposed mega auction in 2025 could make way for the Premier League model of player transfers. In response, he was quoted as saying, “We will have the mega auction for sure, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting and that format will continue.”
Arun Dhumal also spoke about the benefits of the IPL mega auction in terms of giving a platform to newer talents, not just in India, but from other countries too. He remarked, “Hopefully, the mega auction will be as big and as good as we have had earlier given newer talents coming in not from India and other countries. Teams like Afghanistan have also benefited as they could showcase their talent.”
