On November 24, Punjab Kings signed Shreyas Iyer for INR 26.75 Crore, making him the highest paid player in the history of the tournament in the IPL 2025 mega auction at the Abady Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 29-year-old, who has grown into stature as a T20 cricketer over the last few years while captaining multiple franchises in the IPL, was among the top picks for many teams to bring into the fold for the 2025 season, but he eventually found his way to Punjab Kings, which sent the social media platform X into a feeding frenzy.
After Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in the 2024 season, he was one of the surprising player releases from their squad ahead of the upcoming IPL auction. The right-handed batter was a part of KKR for the last three seasons, missing out the 2023 edition of the tournament due to injury, but his return to the league earlier this year was very fruitful for him with the bat and as the captain.
Prior to his time at KKR, Shreyas Iyer was an integral part of Delhi Capitals (DC) for seven straight seasons of the IPL after debuting in the 2015 edition of the tournament. He has also led DC to the final of the IPL in 2020, apart from making 87 of his 116 appearances in the league for the Delhi-based franchise, scoring more than 2300 runs, which played a key role in his ascend to the Indian cricket team in all formats of the game.
