With the Rohit Sharma-led Team India clinching the five-match Test series against England with a match to spare, new reports reveal that wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was contacted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the series. However, these new reports come as a surprise, it further reveals that the cricketer had denied match-readiness to be able to play in the Test series.
Although, the Jharkhand cricketer is yet to make himself available for selection as of now, ESPNcricinfo confirmed the latest update to the ongoing Ishan Kishan saga. As per ESPNcricinfo, "the team management had got in touch with Kishan during the ongoing Test series against England, but Kishan said he was not ready yet”.
It is to be noted that Ishan Kishan had left India’s tour of South Africa, citing personal reasons. While Kishan was expected to feature in domestic cricket, he chose to remain absent from his state side and continued to extend it even further, leading to warnings from the BCCI. It further led to the Indian board denying a central contract to the wicketkeeper-batter.
BCCI hints at Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s inclusion in BCCI central contracts
However, Ishan Kishan is not the only one. Shreyas Iyer also joined him in the list of cricketers to be axed of a central contract. The BCCI moreover did not give any reason on why they were dropped but, in its release, gave a major hint. “The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team,” the board stated.
It is to be noted that Shreyas Iyer, who featured in the first two Tests against England, was released from the side after he complained of back and groin issues. However, he was found okay by the BCCI medical team but the middle-order batter did not make himself available to play the Ranji Trophy matches.
