India’s Rajeshwari Kumari became the second Indian women to secure an Olympic quota in women’s trap after finishing fifth in the final at the ISSFS World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. However, Kumari failed to secure a medal finish for the side in her category at the World Championships, she became the seventh Indian to secure a quota in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

 

The 31-year-old, whose blood runs in shotgun shooting scored a national record of 120, to break her own previous best of 118 in the qualification round. Rajeshwari finished with 19 hits from first 30-targets of six woman 50-shot final to seal her place in the Olympics. In the women’s trap event, it was Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yi Chun who won the gold with 40 hits, followed by Italy’s Jessica Rossi taking the silver.

 

With this finish, she also became the fourth player to secure a Paris Olympics quota at the ongoing World Championships in Baku. The 31-year-old is also the second trap shooter after Shagun Chowdhary to ever earn an Olympic quota in women’s trap.

 

Talking about India at the ongoing ISSF World Championships 2023, the country is placed third with five gold and five bronze medals, only behind China and USA. Earlier it was Sift Kaur Samra to secure an Olympics quota, finishing fifth in her event. Among other shooters to secure 2024 Paris Olympics quota are Akhil Sheoran, Mehuli Ghosh, Singhraj Adhana, Rudrankksh Patil and Bowneesh Mendiratta.
