The Chairman of Mahindra Group Anand Mahindra shared a special message for former Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand. The tweet came after Teenage Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh overtook him in the live world (FIDE) rankings. The ranking updates came after Gukesh beat Misratdin Iskandarov in the second round of the Chess World Cup earlier this week.
The 68-year-old Industrialist took to his Twitter to congratulate the 17-year-old. Over the same tweet, he shared a special message for Anand. He tweeted, “Bravo, @DGukesh! This pic with you as well as the few moves you ALLOWED me to play against you will be hugely valuable parts of my archive of memories…. May you rise to be the World’s Numero Uno… And @vishy64theking, it must feel strange to have someone overtake you, but how satisfying that it’s someone YOU inspired to play the game!”
In the game, the 17-year-old defeated Azerbaijan’s Iskandarov in just 44 moves in the second game of the second-round match. With this victory, Gukesh entered the top 10 of the live (FIDE) world rankings and overtook Anand. As per the latest standings, Gukesh is the highest-ranked Indian, ahead of Anand.
Notably, Anand remained India’s top-ranked player since January 1997, after he made it to the World’s top 10 in 1991. As per the rankings, Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen currently sits at the top of the standings.
