In an effort to enhance transparency and improve fan engagement, the Italian football league has introduced new Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocols for the Coppa Italia semi-finals and final. These changes aim to provide spectators with clearer insights into refereeing decisions during matches. Referees will now explain VAR-related decisions directly to fans within the stadium and to television audiences. This initiative involves the use of audio technology that enables officials to communicate the rationale behind decisions made after on-field reviews. The primary goal is to make refereeing decisions more transparent and understandable for all stakeholders, including players, coaches, and fans.
In addition to audio explanations, the league will implement the "VARdict" system during Serie A fixtures, starting from the 30th matchday. This system will display VAR graphics on giant screens within stadiums, informing spectators of ongoing reviews or extended VAR checks. The first match to feature this enhancement will be the Como versus Empoli game on March 29, 2025. Italy has been at the forefront of integrating technology into football officiating, being among the first to adopt semi-automated offside detection.

The 2024–25 Coppa Italia semi-finals promise thrilling football as four teams battle for a spot in the final. The marquee clash features a fierce Milan derby, with Inter Milan facing AC Milan. The first leg takes place on April 2, with the return fixture on April 23.
In the other semi-final, Bologna meet Empoli in what could be a closely contested tie. Bologna edged past Atalanta with a late goal from Santiago Castro, while Empoli stunned Juventus in a dramatic penalty shootout. The first leg is set for April 1, followed by the second leg on April 24.
