Former India captain and legend Sunil Gavaskar on Monday, November 25 hailed Team India’s dominating win against Australia in Perth, where the visitors defeated the hosts by 295 runs to take an early 1-0 lead in the highly-anticipated five-match Test series, down under. However, it was India’s historic win, the former India cricketer also took a moment to appreciate the efforts of stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah, who took the helm in absence of Rohit Sharma for the Perth Test, scalped eight wickets, completing his 11th five-wicket haul in the first Australia innings and then taking three more wickets to finish the first Test in a dominating position. After leading the team from the front, Sunil Gavaskar identified the Indian pace spearhead as the best of the generation.
Jasprit Bumrah is a great bowler: Sunil Gavaskar
Speaking on the sidelines of the first Test in Perth, Gavaskar refused to be drawn into the game of identifying India’s best when he was posed with the question. “Let’s not compare because there we have been some very, very great bowlers. We have had Kapil Dev, who bowled India to several great victories. Let’s be happy with the fact we have got another great bowler in Jasprit Bumrah,” the former Indian cricketer said, as quoted by India Today.
It is to be noted that Bumrah has been regarded as the greatest all-format bowler of modern era, and several pundits have even hailed him as the greatest to represent India. The fast bowler with eight wickets in the first Test, completed 40 wickets in Australia from eight matches he has played so far. His average (18.80) is only bettered by Sir Richard Hadlee (17.83).
On the other hand, the former India cricketer also hailed India’s dominating win over Australia to kickstart the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 on a high. “India had the bowling attack to trouble Australia. That’s for sure. But this massive margin of win was not something that’s easy to think of, because even Australia had a very good pace attack. But, 295 is a massive, massive win,” he added.
