Ever since Virat Kohli stepped down from India's Test captaincy, the talks around India's next captain started doing rounds. While Rohit Sharma's name was right at the top and he got the position, there were three more names being considered. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah were also being seen as India's future captains.

Although the BCCI Selection Committee led by Chetan Sharma named Rohit Sharma as the new all-format captain, they also pointed out the grooming of future captains under Rohit. While KL Rahul got the opportunity to lead India in South Africa, Pant was named Rohit's deputy in the West Indies series. Now, for the Sri Lanka series, Jasprit Bumrah will play the vice-captain's role.

With all the speculations still rife about who will be India's long-term captain after Rohit Sharma ends his tenure, the captain himself has come up with names. Agreeing with what Chetan Sharma had said while announcing the squad for the Sri Lanka series, Rohit Sharma also pointed out Rahul, Pant, and Bumrah's name as possible future leaders for team India.

"Bumrah, Rahul, and Pant are seen as possible contenders for leadership in future, they play a crucial role in Indian cricket," said Sharma in the pre-series press conference.

Bumrah yet to get captaincy exposure

Among the three names, KL Rahul seems to be leading the race having performed for India consistently. However, on the limited occasions, he has got so far, Rahul has failed to yield results for the team. In the one Test he captained, India lost. It was followed by three losses in the ODI series. Also. while captaining Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, Rahul has lost 15 of the 27 games he has led.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is yet to get an opportunity to lead the national side. But as his IPL captain stint, Pant has been impressive. Pant was named DC's captain when Shreyas Iyer injured himself. It worked wonders for Pant as he won 10 out of 16 games, he led DC in. And this tempted his franchise to retain him as the leader.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah- the captain is yet to unveiled. The right-arm quick has neither led the national team nor his franchise. However, Bumrah can prove to be a great leader with the right mix of aggression and skill. He is among those players who are aggressive with their performances. But his limited appearances can go against him.
