On Saturday, July 27, Joe Root, the former England captain, reached 12,000 runs in Test cricket, becoming the second youngest player to achieve the record feat after his former teammate Alastair Cook. The moment happened on day two of the third Test match against West Indies at Edgbaston in Birmingham, followed by a thunderous applause from fans.
Notably, Joe Root went past the 12,000 run milestone in his 143rd Test match, at an age of 33 years and 210 days, putting Brian Lara behind in the all time list as well. His former teammate Alastair Cook is the youngest to get past this milestone, at an age of 33 years and 13 days.
At the start of day two, England were in a tough spot at 38/3, in pursuit of the 282-run first innings score from West Indies. The English batting lineup lost two more quick wickets of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, to get reduced to 54/5 before Joe Root and Ben Stokes stitched together a 115-run stand for the sixth wicket to bring the team back into the contest.
During this important partnership, Joe Root smashed a pull shot off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph for four runs at the start of the post-lunch session, to get past 12,000 runs in Test cricket. Following the dismissal of Ben Stokes for 54 off 69, Joe Root and Jamie Smith shared a 62-run stand, to get closer to the first innings total of West Indies.
As of this writing, England are 252/7 in their first innings with Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes at the crease, just 30 runs behind West Indies.
