Jos Buttler, the England white-ball captain, is reportedly doubtful to play for his team during their upcoming T20I series against Australia, starting on September 11. The 33-year-old hasn’t played any professional cricket after sustaining a calf injury in July, while preparing to be a part of the Hundred for Manchester Originals, with his last match happening against India in June.
Notably, during the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana, India defeated Jos Buttler-led England in a one-sided contest by 68 runs. After sustaining the calf injury, Jos Buttler missed out on playing in the Hundred, and now, a setback during his recovery phase means that he won’t be turning up for Lancashire in the T20 Blast quarter-final either, according to the ESPNcricinfo report.
England aren’t overly concerned about the fitness of Jos Buttler
Despite that, the same report states that England aren’t overly concerned about the fitness of their talisman ahead of the T20I series opener against Australia at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The English squad is due to reach the stadium on the south coast of England this coming Sunday, prior to their two days of training for the challenge ahead.
That’s when the English medical staff will decide whether Jos Buttler starts the T20I series against Australia later this month.
Dale Benkenstein, the head coach of Lancashire, spoke to BBC Radio Lancashire about Jos Buttler’s availability for the T20 Blast match. He said, “We've had some bad news on his recovery. He had an injury he was recovering from, and he's sort of tweaked it again. He's not only just out of our T20s, but I think he's even struggling to make the international ones. He was very keen to play for us.”
