Italian giants Juventus, who are the 36-time Serie A champions, have sacked their manager Thiago Motta from the role after just nine months in charge of the first team. Juve have replaced the former Italian international Thiago Motta with the Croatian Igor Tudor, and he will be in charge of the team for the first-time on Saturday, March 29, in a home match at the Allianz Stadium in Turin against Genoa in the Serie A.
Notably, during Thiago Motta’s reign as manager, Juventus played 29 matches in the Serie A, winning 13 and losing three, but they found themselves in fifth place on the points table, a point outside the UEFA Champions League slots before his departure. In their last two Serie A matches under the 42-year-old, Juventus were thrashed 0-4 at home by Atalanta, while his last match in charge was a 0-3 defeat away from home against Fiorentina.
Juventus are out of reckoning as far as UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia are concerned
In the UEFA Champions League, Juventus are already eliminated after losing in the play-off round to PSV Eindhoven, while they weren’t able to defend their Coppa Italia title after losing to Empoli in the quarter-final. With a run of mixed results over the past month or so, the Italian giants took the tough decision to let Thiago Motta go, bringing in Igor Tudor in his place.
The official statement from Juventus on the matter read, “Juventus FC announces that it has relieved Thiago Motta of his position as coach of the men's first team. Juventus also announces that it has entrusted the leadership of the Men's First Team to Igor Tudor who will direct the first training session tomorrow.” Igor Tudor, who is a 46-year-old, was a part of Juventus in his playing days before being an assistant to Andrea Pirlo at the club in 2020.
The Croatian was the manager of Italian club Lazio for a three-month spell at the conclusion of the last club football season.
