Following their flop show in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed Kane Williamson as their new captain for the remaining of IPL 2021. Notably, the Kiwi skipper will take over the duties of David Warner in the ongoing edition of IPL.

Even though Warner's captaincy was under scrutiny this season, the move from SRH has shocked everyone. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the southpaw has not been in the best of his forms and has struggled so far with a strike rate of 110.28, his worst in the history of the mega event.

SRH have won just one of their six matches played so far in IPL 2021. With 2 points and a net run rate of -0.264, the side are at the last spot in the points table. Their chances of making it to the playoff this season seem bleak and this might have forced SRH to take a chance by giving 2019 World Cup-finalist Williamson an opportunity to lead the side.

The news of Williamson replacing Warner as captain was shared on social media via a press release by SRH. They admitted that "the decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years".

Here is what SRH said:

Sunrisers play their next game on Sunday against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Given the side have already stated that they are going to make changes in their overseas combination for their upcoming game, the fans might see Warner warm the bench.

Notably, under Warner's captaincy, SRH had won the IPL title in 2016 after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore. The southpaw had also led the side to the Qualifier 2 of IPL last season where they lost to Delhi Capitals.
