On Thursday, September 5, Kapil Parmar became the first Indian para judoka to win a medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024 after defeating Elielton de Oliveira of Brazil with a 10-0 scoreline at the Grand Palais Éphémère. In the bronze medal match of the men’s judo J1 event, Kapil Parmar was clinical from start to finish against Elielton de Oliveira, registering an ippon to make history in Paris for India at the Paralympic Games.

The 25th medal for India at the Paris Paralympics 2024 came with a stunning performance from Kapil Parmar in men’s judo J1 event. After putting aside the disappointment of losing the semi-final against S. Banitaba Khorram Abadi of Iran with an ippon (10-0 margin), he went onto defeat his Brazilian opponent Elielton de Oliveira in the same way.

I came to this sport because I was always fighting with my friends at school: Kapil Parmar

Earlier in the day, the quarter-final of the men’s judo J1 event saw Kapil Parmar blank Marco Dennis Blanco of Venezuela 10-0, scoring an ippon in a one-sided match. Ultimately, the tough journey for Kapil Parmar, who suffered vision impairment due to an electric shock at a young age, culminated with a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024.

In his recent interview with ibsa.org, Kapil Parmar spoke about how he got into judo before making a professional career in it. He said, “I came to this sport because I was always fighting with my friends at school, and my teachers told me that I should pick a sport to spend my energy in the best way possible.”
