England lower-order batter Charlie Dean's dismissal during the third One Day International against India at the iconic Lord's has triggered a massive debate on social media. Indian off-spinner Deepti Sharma ran Dean out at the non-striker end when the batter had left the crease before the ball was released to clinch the match. As a result, India completed a series sweep.
The dismissal though sparked a debate on social media among fans and members of the cricket fraternity. While a large section of England cricket fraternity termed the runout against 'spirit of the game', Indian cricket fraternity largely stood by Deepti & Co. and claimed the dismissal fair.
Former Indian batter Virender Sehwag and current off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin were amongst many who expressed their support for Deepti Sharma.
Even though the likes of Stuart Broad and James Anderson have come out in criticism of Deepti's actions, former England cricketer Monty Panesar cited one of MS Dhoni's videos and claimed the right way to escape 'Mankad' dismissal.
The clip Monty shared is from IPL when Dhoni can be seen keeping his bat behind the crease while he is a step ahead of the crease.
Speaking of 'Mankad' mode of dismissal, the wording of MCC Law 41.16.1 reads, "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out."
Looking at the outrage among a few sections of the cricket fraternity, MCC issued a statement regarding the whole Deepti Sharma episode and suggested the non-striker batter stay well within their crease.
"Message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler's hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen. It was properly officiated yesterday," read the statement.
