India’s star shuttler Lakshya Sen beat reigning All England champion Li Shi Feng on Sunday, July 9 to win the Canada Open. The Indian shuttler beat his Chinese opponent in straight games 21-18, 22-20 to seal his second BWF Super 500 title.
The 21-year-old, who hails from the city of Almora outshined the reigning champion in just 50 minutes. It is to be noted that Sen earlier claimed his maiden Super 500 title in 2022 at the India Open. However, it was his first since winning a gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in August last year. The World No. 19 ranked Sen became the second singles player from India to win a title this year, following HS Prannoy, who won the Malaysia Masters in May.
The Indian ace also took to Twitter to share his happiness of claiming his maiden Canada Open title. "Sometimes, the hardest battles lead to the sweetest victories. The wait is over, and I am delighted to be crowned the Canada Open winner," he wrote.
The 21-year-old India opened up on his win in Calgary. “Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn’t go my way. So this win will be a big boost to my confidence,” Sen told PTI following his second Super 500 win. “I had to dig deep in some matches, the conditions were different and getting used to it was important,” Sen further added.
Indian Olympic medallist PV Sindhu bowed out of the Canada Open following her loss to Japan’s Akrane Yamaguchi. The 28-year-old went down 14-21, 15-21 to World No. 1 in her women’s singles semifinal in Calgary.
