On July 26, Thursday, Inter Miami thrashed Atlanta United by a margin of 4-0 during their second match in Group J of the Leagues Cup. In his first full start for the American club, Lionel Messi scored twice in this comprehensive victory at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, but what captured the attention of the fans the most, was one of the goal celebrations from the Argentine World Cup winner.
The 36-year-old, generally, puts his hand up high in the air and points towards the heavens, to enjoy putting the ball in the back of the net. But, this time, he signaled to his family, which included his wife Antonela Rocuzza, mother Celia, and sons Thiago, Ciro, and Mateo, in the grandstands at the DRV PNK Stadium.

It was speculated that Lionel Messi paid homage to Thor, a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who is also the favorite of his son Thiago. He posed quite similarly to the Asgardian God of Thunder, using a serious face, while putting out his hand with the expectation of the hammer to arrive. Messi's sons went crazy after their father pulled off the celebration mid-game, which put a smile on his face too.
Notably, the wife of Lionel Messi, who goes by the name of Antonela Roccuzzo, sent out an Instagram story, to share the meaning behind the new celebration from her husband. She put out the Thor hammer in the post, calling it “Thorsday,” to confirm what everyone had speculated earlier.
Apart from the Argentine footballing superstar scoring the first two goals in the 8th and 22nd minute for Inter Miami, Robert Taylor also got on the scoresheet twice, during the 44th and 53rd minutes against Atlanta United. Christopher McVey was shown a red card in the 84th minute, but it didn’t hamper the hosts in securing a comprehensive win, to qualify for the next round of the Leagues Cup.
