Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, who currently represents Gremio in Brazil, won't be joining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS) this summer as according to numerous sources, the talks between Gremio and Inter Miami have broken down, and the transaction is off.
Suarez, who has 13 goals in 31 appearances for Gremio this season, was apparently sought by Inter Miami, a team in the Major League Soccer league that David Beckham co-owns. The 36-year-old was viewed as a possible star signing for the American team, who are trying to improve after placing 11th in the Eastern Conference the previous season.
In a news conference on Monday, Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino stated that "there are some obstacles " regarding the transfer move for Suárez. "After all is said and done there are some obstacles with regard to his situation with Grêmio and this means that it is not all Inter Miami's decision," Martino stated. Suárez is reportedly willing to return a total of $10 million of his earnings to walk away from Brazil. But Grêmio are keen for the player to continue at least until December.
Gremio manager Renato Portaluppi also cleared that the forward will stay at his club until the end of the year and that the “soap opera” is over. He said: “The deal won’t happen. Luis will stay at Gremio until December, the soap opera is over now”. He also praised the Uruguayan for his professionalism and commitment amid the transfer speculation.
The 36-year-old will now concentrate on assisting Gremio in their pursuit of the Copa do Brasil, the country's version of the FA Cup and Copa del Rey. To strengthen their assault, Inter Miami will need to explore elsewhere for a new striker.
