In his latest column, Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, wrote about how he believes Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in Test cricket. The 49-year-old praised Joe Root for his batting skill, recent form, ability to withstand pressure, and taking English cricket forward after quitting the national team captaincy a couple of years ago.
During the second Test match between England and West Indies at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Joe Root struck his 32nd Test hundred, equalling his contemporaries Steve Smith and Kane Williamson in the all-time list. He also reached the number eight position in the all-time Test run-scoring charts, getting past Mahela Jayawardene and Shivnarine Chanderpaul last week.
Vaughan sees Joe Root breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record
Joe Root has 11,940 Test runs to his name in 142 matches currently, with the likes of Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, and Alastair Cookin sight in the all-time list. Michael Vaughan proclaimed that Joe Root will be the highest Test run scorer for England in the next few months, getting past his former teammate Alastair Cook, who has scored 12,472 runs in 161 matches.
Root will become England’s leading run-scorer: Vaughan
The latest column for the Telegraph from Michael Vaughan read, “Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. As the rock, Root is obviously key to that, and I love that he kept the reverse-scoop in the locker until he was past 100 and England’s lead was massive.”
“Against an attack like the West Indies in these conditions, you expect him to get a century. He missed out in the first innings but was so determined to put it right in the second. He was never going to make the same mistakes,” he further added.
