Mirabai Chanu, the silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics and World Championships, is set to headline the Indian weightlifting team at the Asian Games 2023. The four-member squad to take part in the continental multi-sport event will also feature Bindiyarani Devi, Achinta Sheuli, and N Ajith.
Asian Games, set to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to 8, will have Mirabai Chanu compete in the 49 kg women’s weightlifting category, while the Commonwealth and Asian Games silver medalist Bindiyaran Devi will participate in the 55 kg women’s weightlifting category. Commonwealth Games gold medalist Achinta Sheuli and National Games winner N Ajith are both set to take part in the 73 kg men’s weightlifting category.
It’s been reported that Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the Commonwealth Games gold medalist in the 67 kg men’s weightlifting category, has been ruled out of the Asiad due to a slip-disc injury.
Mirabai Chanu and Bindiyarani Devi prepare in USA for Asian Games 2023
As part of the Asian Games 2023 preparation, Mirabai Chanu and Bindiyarani Devi are currently at SQUAT University in Saint Louis, USA. During their 65-day long stay in the country, they are focused on improving their strength and conditioning ahead of upcoming continental games.
The two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Mirabai Chanu had undergone hip surgery in December. On her return to competitive action in May at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jingu, South Korea, the 28-year-old superstar finished in sixth place. She has been instructed by Dr Aron Horschig at SQUAT University during her training in the USA.
