All-rounder Mohammad Nabi will be resigning as Afghanistan's captain after the loss against Australia in the T20 World Cup.   Nabi announced his decision to resign as the captain of the Afghans suffered a four-run loss to Australia in Adelaide in their last Super 12 fixture of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Addressing his decision, Nabi expressed that he and the team management were not on the same page and hence he took this decision. Nabi released a statement on Twitter which said,  "Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not us nor our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches. From the last one year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want it or need  for a big tournament."

"Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance. Therefore, with due respect, effective immediately I announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me."

"I thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart who came to the grounds despite matches being affected by the rain and those who supported us worldwide, your love truly means a lot to us. Long live Afghanistan."

Talking about the Australia-Afghanistan game, the Group 1 fixture ended up as a thrilling encounter. The Aussies batted first and posted a 167-run total for the Afghans. Maxwell was the best batter for the hosts as he scored 54 in 32 balls with six fours and two sixes. Then in the second innings, Afghanistan's batting had a decent start but soon collapsed against leg-spinner Adam Zampa.

The 13th over of the game saw the Afghans lose three wickets in four balls which halted their momentum. Then towards the end, Rashid Khan brought back hopes for his country as he smashed 48 in 34 balls but fell short by four runs in thrilling fashion.
