Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who got reported for a suspect bowling action during a County Championship stint for Surrey, has been asked to undergo further Tests by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The appearance of Shakib Al Hasan in whites for Surrey happened in early September against Somerset, which ended in a defeat by 111 runs for his team at the County Ground in Taunton.
In this County Championship Division I match, Shakib Al Hasan bowled a whopping 63.2 overs across two innings, picking up nine wickets for 193 runs. But despite his best efforts with the ball, Surrey were unable to overhaul the 221-run target on the final day against Somerset, getting bundled out for 109 runs while batting defensively for 78 overs in their bid to draw the contest.
The umpires didn’t give a single no-ball for throwing when Shakib Al Hasan was bowling
Despite that, Surrey went on to win their third straight County Championship Division I title, but in the meantime, Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling action was already deemed to be suspect by the umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Millns after their loss at the County Ground in Taunton. It is important to note that the umpires didn’t give a single no-ball for throwing when Shakib Al Hasan was bowling for Surrey against Somerset.
While Shakib Al Hasan is still eligible to play competitive cricket, the report from ESPNcricinfo stated that negotiations are underway for the left-arm spinner to undergo further tests on his bowling action in an approved location. It is expected that the tests will happen in the next couple of weeks, which will determine whether the Bangladesh all-rounder continues to bowl at professional level, or he will have to compete as a pure batter altogether.
