Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, MS Dhoni is all set to feature in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly agreeing on five to six retentions ahead of the mega auction, which is scheduled to take place later this year. However, all these things are yet to be confirmed, but with MS Dhoni playing his last few editions with injuries, his future in the cash-rich league remains the biggest question which still remains to be answered.
Amid this, sources have confirmed that MS Dhoni will play the 2025 edition of the tournament after he asserted that if the franchises are allowed to make five to six retentions, he might ply his trade for the five-time champions for one last time. According to a report which was published by Cricbuzz, it stated that Dhoni’s retention is likely to depend on the number of retentions that BCCI will allow. The 43-year-old has communicated that if BCCI allows franchises to retain five or six players, he could feature in the IPL 2025.
MS Dhoni to play as uncapped player in IPL 2025? R Ashwin opens up
Days ago, star Indian off-spinner R Ashwin also opened up on possibility of MS Dhoni featuring in the 2025 edition of the tournament, but he also added that he will feature as an uncapped player. It is to be noted that the IPL rule book states that players who have retired from international cricket for five years can be termed uncapped. However, it was abolished in 20211 and thus Dhoni cannot be a uncapped player.
"Will Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That's a big question mark. The point is correct. He hasn't played international cricket for many years. He has retired. So, he is an uncapped player. He is not a capped player," Ashwin said on his official YouTube channel.
"Can a player like Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That is another conversation. Obviously, if someone talks about Dhoni, everyone will talk about it," he added.
