Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi opened up on the captaincy rumours and said that his focus has never been on captaincy, rather not bringing any negativity into the team. The former Pakistan captain denied rumours of replacing Babar Azam as the next captain of the side. Not only this, but the youngster also denied reports of any rifts in the team and stated that all teammates are his friends.
Afridi, in his recent interview, as quoted by cricketpakistan.com.pk, spoke about many factors. The cricketer primarily denied the reports of being re-appointed as the captain of the Pakistan team instead of Babar Azam. He said, “All team members are my friends. I was raised well, and I always fight for my country. I never think about captaincy. My prime docs is to represent my country and never bring negativity into the team.”
Afridi also opened up on his chances of his possible snub from Pakistan’s next two match series against Bangladesh, set to be played at home from August 21. The left-arm quick revealed he had no idea about the same. Afridi added, "My job is to be in the present, and I don't think about the future. If your present is good, you can be well-prepared for the future. Captaincy is not in my hands, and I have never played my cricket for captaincy. My role is to play cricket, and I would do that with dignity.”
It is to be noted that Afridi was appointed Pakistan’s captain, after Azam stepped down from the role following a disappointing ODI World Cup 2023. The youngster was team’s skipper for a brief period of time while leading the side in a five-match series against New Zealand, which resulted in a 1-4 loss.
