On Monday, September 23, the League Two team, AFC Wimbledon, announced that their upcoming League Cup third-round tie against Premier League’s Newcastle United has been postponed due to extensive overnight flooding of the Cherry Reds Records Stadium in Wimbledon. The League Cup clash, which was scheduled to take place on September 24, with the kick-off slated for 19:45 BST, will get rescheduled after flooding of the River Wandle and the surrounding areas in South-West London.
Notably, AFC Wimbledon had reached the third round of the League Cup after defeating Bromley 2-1 away and Ipswich Town 2(4)-(2)2 at home in the first couple of rounds of the competition last month. Meanwhile, Newcastle United, who have had a splendid start in the Premier League, earning 10 points from their first five matches, would have begun their League Cup campaign in the third round tie in London in a day’s time, but they will have to wait for it.

After the overnight flooding, the stadium of AFC Wimbledon had huge craters open in the corner of the pitch, rendering the conditions unplayable for professional or any football match for that matter. “We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed. More information will follow in due course regarding fixture rearrangement. The stadium is closed until further notice,” wrote AFC Wimbledon on their official X account earlier today.
The EFL, who organise the League Cup, got the power to move a match to a neutral ground or abandon it, the latter would lead to the away team getting a bye to the next round if needed. Moreover, on Saturday, September 28, AFC Wimbledon are due to host Accrington Stanley at the Cherry Reds Records Stadium, but that match might also get postponed if the pitch isn’t brought to a playable condition in five days time.
