The injury which did not look good, kept him out in Sri Lanka’s subsequent matches against Australia and the Netherlands, thereafter ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament. Notably, Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday, October 24 confirmed Angelo Mathews as the replacement for the fast bowler.

“Mathews approved as replacement for Pathirana in Sri Lanka squad”, the SLC captioned the post. The Sri Lanka cricket board in their statement further added, “The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has approved Angelo Mathews as a replacement for Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lanka squad.”

It is to be noted that the 36-year-old had joined the side on Friday, October 20 along with Dushmantha Chameera as travelling reserves. Mathews will participate in his fourth World Cup since the 2011. The veteran all-rounder has featured in 221 ODI matches scoring 5865 runs, with his highest score of 139*.
