On October 1, 1999, Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, came up with a brilliant century as India defeated Zimbabwe by 107 runs to reach the finals of the LG Cup. After defeating South Africa and Kenya in their previous matches, India were already favourites to reach the final with one fixture remaining against Zimbabwe in Nairobi. After losing the toss, India were asked to bat first in match number six of the LG Cup 1999.
Batting first, India got a good start as Sadagoppan Ramesh and Sourav Ganguly put up a partnership of 70 runs in 16.1 overs. Ramesh got out after scoring 31 runs off 49 balls hitting three boundaries. After that, Ganguly added 107 runs with Robin Singh for the second wicket. Robin scored 41 runs off 62 balls with four fours and a maximum. After that, the Prince of Kolkata took charge of the innings, and went on to scorer his seventh ODI ton.
Nikhil Chopra took 4 wickets as India bowled Zimbabwe out for 170 runs
Sourav Ganguly got out after scoring 139(147) runs with 11 fours and five sixes. After that, Sunil Joshi also gave finishing touches with 25(13) as India posted 277/6 on the board. For Zimbabwe, Guy Whittall took three wickets, Henry Olonga took two, while Murray Goodwin put one in his bag. Chasing the imposing total, Zimbabwe also had a good start as Neil Johnson (52 off 67) and Neil Johnson (38 off 38) added 52 runs for the first wicket in 10.3 overs.
However, Zimbabwe couldn't find another such partnerships as they were bowled out for just 170 runs in 38.3 overs, losing the game by 107 runs. Nikhil Chopra shone with the ball taking four wickets by conceding 33 runs in his 8.3-over spell. Apart from that, Vijay Bharadwaj also took three wickets, while Venkatesh Prasad and Debasis Mohanty took one-one each. However, India went on to lose the final of the LG Cup against South Africa by 26 runs.
