After the Euro 2024 qualifier between Bulgaria and Hungary, massive fights and protests broke out near the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria. The thrilling encounter ended as a 2-2 draw after the hosts conceded a late injury-time own goal courtesy of Alex Petkov. As indicated by the scoreline, the game was a topsy-turvy affair as both teams found goals amidst a lot of drama.

Similarly, chaos ensued outside the field as violent clashes were seen in Sofia as countless fans slammed the Bulgarian football federation and blamed them for the national team's poor results. Fans were more resentful as the match against Hungary was played behind closed doors.
Talking about the protests, Bulgarian fans were seen throwing makeshift bombs, stones and plastic bottles at the police, which responded with a water cannon. Similarly, trash cans were set on fire in the capital while local media reported also several protesters were injured.

The emergency centre spokeswoman, Katya Sungarska talked about over 30 individuals being injured. As quoted by AFP, Sungarska said, “Twenty-four injured were examined, including seven who were hospitalised with head traumas, broken legs and arms and many who were gassed with pepper spray."
Stefan Ivanov, deputy chief of the Sofia police directorate also gave a number on the number of casualties. As per AFP, Ivanov said, " The injured police are 33, there are some with serious injuries and hospitalised.”
