After registering a win on his Olympic debut, Indian men's singles Badminton star La kshya Sen took down Julian Carraggi of Belgium with a 21-19, 21-14 margin. Playing at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, Sen was dealt a tricky hand before this clash, as his opening game result was deleted after Guatemalan player Kevin Cordon withdrew after an injury.
Hence, Sen is now required to win both of his remaining Group L games to qualify for the next stage of the Summer Games. With this target set, the 22-year-old Indian started his match against Carraggi with a thrilling comeback win in the first game.
After levelled scores at 4-4, the Belgian zoomed forward as he stitched up quick points. But Sen held his own to avoid a massive gap and then towards the end picked consecutive points to register a 21-19 win. Sen upped his game to the next level as he registered a dominant 20-14 victory to be one step away from qualifying for the next stage of the Paris Olympics.
Ahead of this win, Lakshya Sen’s win over Guatemalan player Kevin Cordon was “deleted” from consideration for the final standings. As per BWF General Competition Regulations for the group stage, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving Cordon in Group L are now considered deleted as he withdrew from the event after an elbow injury.
The specific regulation for the situation, Rule no 16.2.5, states “If illness, injury, disqualification or other unavoidable hindrance prevents a Player/pair completing all the group matches, all the results of that Player/pair shall be deleted. Retiring during a match shall be considered to be not completing all group matches.”
