Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who sparked massive controversy with her participation in the Paris Olympics 2024, has decided to take legal action over her leaked medical reports. Notably, the 25-year-old defied a row over her gender eligibility to win the gold in women’s category at the global tournament. The controversy seemed to have settled in her favour until a French journalist claimed via an alleged medical report that the boxer is biologically a male.
As the controversy once again surfaced, the Algerian boxer decided to move courts over reports about the leaked reports published in the media. The reports in France earlier this week claimed that Khelif has XY, or male chromosomes. The controversy ignited during the Paris Olympics 2024 when Khelif defeated Angela Carini in just 46 seconds in the opening round. Carini then broke down into tears and abandoned the fight after suffering a badly hurt nose injury.
Imane Khelif takes legal action, confirms International Olympic Committee
The officials at the IOC confirmed that the Algerian boxer has decided to move courts over her alleged medical reports. An official statement confirmed, “We understand that Imane Khelif has taken legal action against individuals who commented on her situation during the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and is also preparing a lawsuit in response to the latest reporting.”
It added, “The IOC will not comment while legal action is ongoing, or on media reports about unverified documents whose origin cannot be confirmed." The IOC said that the boxer competed in the women’s category in international competition “for many years” including the previous edition of the Olympics in 2021 in Tokyo as well as at the International Boxing Association (IBA) world championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments.
