Aleem Dar, who had recently retired from umpiring at the international level, has been named as one of the new selectors of the Pakistan cricket team. In a media release on Friday, October 11, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced four new members of the national selection committee, which also included the names of Aqib Javed, Azhar Ali, and Hassan Cheema, apart from Asad Shafiq keeping his job as the fifth member.
Notably, during his 20-year career as the member of the ICC’s Elite and International Umpiring panels, which began in 2003, Aleem Dar officiated in 448 matches, winning the David Shepherd Trophy for the ICC Umpire of the Year three times. He also took the decision to retire from umpiring altogether after the completion of the ongoing 2024-25 domestic cricket season in Pakistan.
Pakistan lost first Test of three-match series against England by an innings and 47 runs
The announcement from the PCB regarding their new selection committee came hours after Pakistan went down against England in a humiliating manner at the Multan Cricket Stadium. After scoring 556 runs in their first innings, Pakistan went on to lose the Test match by an innings and 47 runs in the first session on day five after conceding the fourth highest Team total in Test cricket to England, who had scored 823/7 declared.
According to the PCB, all the five members of the national selection committee of the Pakistan cricket team will have voting rights without confirming if the Test coach Jason Gillespie and the white-ball coach Gary Kirsten will have the same privilege in selecting players. Moreover, Asad Shafiq, who is the only member to keep his job in the newly revamped national selection committee, was a part of it when Mohammad Yousuf tendered his resignation as the selector last month.
