Former India coach Ravi Shastri said that India's star batter Shikhar Dhawan isn’t credited enough. Shastri was in a conversation with Star Sports, where he shared his perspective towards the forthcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023. In the conversation, the former India captain also heaped praise on the left-handed batter and said that he is an amazing player.

The former head coach also talked about the 2019 World Cup and said that Dhawan was missed when India lost the 2019 World Cup semifinal to New Zealand. The 61-year-old said, “People don’t give credit to what Shikhar Dhawan deserves. That guy was an amazing player. We had a brilliant World Cup in 2019 but we lost the semi-final to New Zealand. He was the missing man there.

Shastri added, “A left-hander at the top of the order, as opposed to three right-handers, makes a huge difference when the ball is swinging away.” The ex-India player went on to say that two left-handed batters should come into the squad, and it is the duty of the Chief Selector to find the balance in the batting lineup.

The cricketer-turned-commentator went on to say, “There are three other positions where I think two left-handers have to come in, apart from the top four you mentioned. Now this is where the selectors’ role comes in because they are watching. They know who’s the guy who’s hot. If Tilak Varma is hot, bring him in. If you think Yashasvi Jaiswal is hot, bring him in.”

Notably, the Asia Cup 2023 is set to commence on August 30, whereas the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be hosted from October 5 to November 19 in India.
