Phil Salt has been appointed as the stand-in captain of England for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia after Jos Buttler got ruled out due to a calf injury. The decision from the ECB to give the leadership role to Phil Salt came following a setback for white-ball captain Jos Buttler while recovering from his injury.
Notably, Jos Buttler sustained the calf injury in July while preparing to captain Manchester Originals in the Hundred, which ruled him out of the tournament. Following that, the 34-year-old was aiming to make a comeback to cricket during the quarter-final of the Blast T20 quarter-final match for Lancashire, but the aggravation of his calf injury meant that he had to skip the high stakes contest as well.
The last match for Jos Buttler in professional cricket happened during the T20 World Cup 2024 in June against India at the semi-final stage, which England lost by 68 runs. Meanwhile, as far as Phil Salt’s captaincy credentials are concerned, he had replaced Jos Buttler as captain during Manchester Originals campaign in the Hundred.
Just a day ago, the ECB made a big call to appoint Brendon McCullum as the head coach of England’s white-ball captain after his successes in the same role for the team in Tests over the past couple of seasons. Marcus Trescothick is going to take charge of England’s limited-overs teams on an interim basis after the departure of Matthew Mott before handing over the reigns to Brendon McCullum.
England are slated to play a three-match T20I series against Australia, starting on September 11, before a five-match ODI series between both the teams.
