English football club Nottingham Forest lost their appeal regarding a four-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). With this deduction, Forest are one spot over the relegation zone with 29 points from 36 games. The decision comes after Nottingham's 3-1 against the bottom-placed Sheffield United on May 4.
Nottingham Forest was reprimanded for breaching the PSR rules by £34.5m over three years. The club then argued the independent commission didn't consider the “unique circumstances of the club and its mitigation” to stay under the limit. However, this appeal was dismissed by an independent board.
4-point deduction will remain in place: Premier League on Nottingham Forest
Premier League released a statement confirming this decision. The statement said, "The PSR sanction applied to the assessment period ending season 2022/23 and was appealed by the club on two grounds. The club argued that the independent commission committed an error in not treating its sale of a high-profile player shortly after the assessment period as a mitigating factor and that it committed a further error in electing not to suspend some or all of the points deduction it imposed.
"Each of these grounds was rejected by the appeal board, which found the independent commission was entitled to immediately impose the sanction it did. The four-point deduction will therefore remain in place."
PL relegation battle heats up with Forest's rejected appeal
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are 17th in the table on 29 points, three points ahead of Luton Town and Burnley, who have 24 points. 20th-placed Sheffield United has already been relegated. Now Forest will take on Chelsea at home and Burnley away. Luton will play West Ham before hosting Fulham while Burnley takes on Tottenham in their 37th match of the season.
