Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has given a piece of advice to senior Indian players including the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli amid poor run in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under. Notably, India’s next Test assignment will come in June as they will tour England for a five-match Test series. Before that, Manjrekar believes that both Kohli and Rohit should play in county cricket to prolong their career in red-ball cricket for India. Rohit and Kohli haven’t been able to leave their mark in the ongoing Test series down under.
After scoring a hundred in Perth, Virat Kohli failed to play a big knock in the rest of the series. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has been able to cross the double digit mark just once and opted out of the fifth Test in Sydney. “Both Rohit and Virat if they intend to continue and the selectors want to back them, I would like to see both of them play county cricket and convince the people who will take the big call whether they are ready. Retirement is up to the individual while leaving people out is up to the selectors,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying by India Today.
All the confidence Virat had is getting eroded: Sanjay Manjrekar
Virat Kohli hasn’t been able to get a big knock after a hundred in the first Test in Perth. The 36-year-old has been getting out in the same way in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under by nicking outside off deliveries. Speaking on this, Sanjay Manjrekar said that Kohli has lost his confidence, and there also has been issues with his technique.
"Kohli, with the body of work he has had, his impact and tenacity every time he comes, he’s giving his very best. All the confidence he had is getting eroded. He’s backing himself, giving himself the best chance with his fitness and application. But clearly, there is a technical problem and now; there is a problem of confidence as well,” Manjrekar said.
