Before the UEFA Europa League clash between Ajax and AEK Athens at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, December 14, the fans had vandalised the metro in Amsterdam. It has led to more than 140 fans getting arrested in the capital city of the Netherlands as per the reports in the local media.

The clashes between Ajax and AEK Athens fans began after trains containing them stopped next to each other en route to the Johan Cruyff Arena before kick-off. Then, the fans had also clashed with the police in the city centre of Amsterdam, leading to a station getting evacuated to make sure the trains containing AEK fans could pass safely as per the report from NOS, the Dutch public broadcaster.

Femke Halsema, the Mayor of Amsterdam, spoke about the incidents involving the fans of Ajax and AEK Athens to NOS. He was quoted as saying that the incidents were “a blemish on an exciting football evening that Ajax fans enjoyed a lot.”

After the fan clash in Amsterdam, Ajax defeated AEK Athens in the Group B clash of the UEFA Europa League by 3-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena. But despite this win, Ajax failed to qualify through to the knockout stages of the competition and they will drop down to the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout round playoffs.
