Team India captain Rohit Sharma has once again come under the scanners after Travis Head and Steven Smith smashed Indian bowlers all over the park, leading the hosts, Australia to put 405 runs at Stumps on Day 2. Alex Carey’s half-century further helped the Aussies post 445 runs on the board, putting them in a commanding position in the third BGT Test at The Gabba in Brisbane.
Seeing Rohit Sharma fail to put things right despite India having a good start on Day 2 of the third Test, his captaincy was once again brought under the scanners. Former India cricketer and Head Coach Ravi Shastri also could not hold back his comments as he lambasted at the Indian skipper.
Worst set ups: Ravi Shastri lashes out at Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in third BGT Test
Rohit Sharma, who put defensive field placements despite Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy picking up crucial wickets in the opening session on Day 2, Ravi Shastri hit out at the Indian skipper. With Travis Head and Steve Smith looking to dictate the innings, Ravi Shastri lashed out at Rohit Sharma as he was said saying, “Worst set ups.”
Speaking during his commentating stint on Day 2, former Australia cricketer David Warner also questioned Rohit Sharma’s field placements. He opined that India should have attacked Head and Smith with short balls instead. Moreover, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel also admitted how the bowlers failed to execute their plans against the well set duo of Smith and Head.
“First of all, we can say he's (Head) in pretty good form. But I think for us with the ball, if you look at it from overs 50 to 80, even in the last game, is where we fall short, leaking (runs) a little bit. So, that's one area I think we need to get better at," Morne Morkel said in the post-day press conference.
