After a poor start in the third Test match against England, Team India managed a decent score of 326 runs at a loss of five wickets at the stumps on Day 1. Skipper Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja registered hundreds while debutant Sarfaraz Khan scored a spectacular half-century. The 26-year-old Mumbai batter was close to scoring a century on his international debut, however, Sarfaraz's dream debut ended after a miscommunication with Jadeja, who admitted his mistake through a social media post.

England pacer Mark Wood emerged as the star with the new ball as he dismissed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in quick succession. Later, Tom Hartley joined the party and sent back Rajat Patidar at a score of five in 15 balls. While India were languishing at 33 with a loss of three wickets in nine overs, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja posted a solid 204-run stand to get India back into the game.

After Sharma's dismissal at 131 runs, debutant Sarfaraz stepped and continued increasing the scoring rate with a dazzling approach. Khan quickly scored his maiden international half-century in just 48 balls and went on to build a 77-run partnership with Jadeja. Sarfaraz's dream debut came to an end following a miscommunication with fellow batter Jadeja that led to his heartbreaking run out.

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who scored his fourth Test century, took to social media after the stumps on Day 1 and accepted his mistake of getting Sarafaraz run out. In his Instagram story, Jadeja wrote, "Feeling bad for Sarafraz Khan. It was my wrong call. Well played."
