Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik is all set to retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL) following his stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2024 edition. The 38-year-old, however, will continue to represent his domestic side, Tamil Nadu, for the coming seasons.
Dinesh Karthik has yet to make his call on his international career as he last played for India in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. However, it is reported by Cricinfo that he will also announce his decision on an international career before the conclusion of the IPL 2024.
The Tamil Nadu player is among the elite players to have played all the seasons of the IPL since its inception in 2008 and has represented six teams in the cash-rich league. He has played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) from (2008-10, 2014), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2011, Mumbai Indians from (2012-13), Royal Challengers Bangalore from (2015, 2022-present), Gujarat Lions in (2016-17), and Kolkata Knight Riders in (2018-21).
Karthik has won just one IPL title in his entire career, playing for Mumbai Indians in 2013. He has also captained KKR from 2018-20 till Eoin Morgan took the charge from him. However, the turning point for him came in his twilight years when he endured a fantastic season for RCB in 2022, which opened the gates for his national team return.
Dinesh Karthik has played 242 matches in the world’s toughest league, making him the player with the third most appearances in the IPL, following the legendary IPL skippers MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. In the 14 seasons he played, he amassed 4516 runs playing at middle or lower order with the highest score of an unbeaten 97, playing for KKR.
His best season came in 2013 when he was playing for Mumbai Indians. He had scored 510 runs in 19 games. However, his most explosive season, in terms of strike rate and impact, came in 2022 when he compiled 330 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 183.33. Along with his exploits with the bat, he is also one of the most successful keepers in the IPL. As a keeper, he has taken 141 catches and stumped out 36 times, which is second only to the feat of MS Dhoni.
