It has now been reported that Arsenal’s William Saliba is on Real Madrid’s transfer radar and is the favourite centre-back option for Los Blancos. Although Saliba still has more than two years remaining in his current contract with the Gunners, Real Madrid could look to swoop up the defender in the upcoming summer transfer window. This interest from Madrid is quite understandable as they have struggled a lot with injuries in recent years in the defensive department. Their main-stay center back Edar Militao was injured in November 2024 and is ruled out till the start of the nedxt season. Even David Alaba who recently got back into the Madrid squad, had suffered a cruciate ligament injury, which kept him out of action for more than a year.
While Antonio Rudiger has been Madrid’s main center-back since quite some time, Carlo Ancelotti has deployed Tchouameni in the center-back pairing, having the French midfielder play out of his favoured position. Militao’s injury also gave room for Raul Asencio to rise up the ranks and play for the Madrid outfit. The 22 year old center-back has delivered some solid performances till date, and has earned himself his maiden call-up for the Spanish national team under Luis De La Fuente.
I have two and a half years on my contract..: Saliba speaks out on life at Arsenal
While this news of Real Madrid’s interest in Saliba is surfacing the internet, the recent statement from the French center-back seems to be contradicting the current scenario. Saliba recently said that he is happy at the club and wants to stay. He added by saying, “If you leave this club and don’t win anything, then the fans will forget about you. I wanna win here.” William Saliba who joined the club back in 2019, has since only played 121 games for the Gunners as he has been sent out on loan on multiple occasions.
With no formal statements and offer made as of yet by Real Madrid, only time will tell whether Saliba chooses to continue at Arsenal or decides to make a move to the Spanish Giants.
