On Day 1 of the third Test in the five-match series in Rajkot, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma scored a great hundred against England to resurrect the team’s innings from a difficult position. It led to the former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif hailing the Rohit Sharma innings before stating how he silenced his critics with the bat once again.
After winning the toss and deciding to bat first at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, the captain Rohit Sharma saw the fellow top-order batters of the Indian cricket team, including the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rajat Patidar, get dismissed in the first hour of play. The 37-year-old had a streaky moment of his own early in his innings, with Joe Root dropping his catch at first slip off the bowling of Tom Hartley, but he took control of India’s fortunes from that point onwards.
Rohit Sharma shared a very impressive 204-run stand for the fourth wicket with the local boy Ravindra Jadeja, completing his hundred in the process. When he was dismissed for 131 off 196, an inning which included 14 fours and three sixes, finding the English captain Ben Stokes off the bowling of Mark Wood’s short ball, India were in a very good position at 237/4 in the 64th over.
Shortly afterwards, Mohammed Kaif spoke to the reporters about the hundred from the Indian captain, and said, “Rohit ne muh tod jawab dia hai (Rohit has given an apt response to the critics).
“People who criticised him should keep quiet. He has always silenced his critics with his bat. Whenever anyone doubted his calibre he scored a century like this. I would suggest people not jump to conclusions too early. He is a good cricketer,” Mohammed Kaif added.
At stumps on Day 1, India took their total to 326/5 in 86 overs with Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 110, alongside Kuldeep Yadav, who got a promotion in the batting order, scoring one not out off 10 balls.
