Indian skipper Rohit Sharma created history and joined former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in an exclusive list. On September 19, India kicked off their Test season and were up against neighbours Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The home team is set to play a two-match Test series followed by a three-match ODI series against the Bangla Tigers.

The match didn’t get a favourable start for the home team as well as skipper Rohit Sharma. The Indian skipper was forced to walk back to the pavilion after scoring just six runs off 19 deliveries during the game. While India found themselves in a tough spot in the early hours of the game, Sharma went on to achieve a career milestone and created history. This was the first time Sharma was leading India in the red-ball format against Bangladesh.

Rohit Sharma creates history, joins MS Dhoni in elite list

This was the first time Rohit Sharma led the Indian team in a Test match against Bangladesh. Sharma played his first Test against Bangladesh in 2015 and was also part of the two-match Test series against them in 2019. However, he was injured at the start of 2017 and missed the one-off Test against the Bengal Tigers.

With this, the 37-year-old created history and joined the 2011 World Cup winning captain MS Dhoni in an exclusive list. He has now become the only second Indian captain after Dhoni to lead the side in all formats against Bangladesh. The first time Rohit led the side against Bangladesh in a T20I was in 2018. During that time, the Rohit-led side clashed against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy.

Later in 2018, Sharma led the Men in Blue in the 2018 Asia Cup where India defeated their neighbours Bangladesh to lift the trophy in the final. Virat was rested from both the tournaments and Rohit shouldered the responsibilities of the captain. With today’s match, Rohit has now led India in 1 Test, six ODIs and 7 T20Is against Bangladesh. On the other hand, Dhoni led the side in one Test, 11 ODIs and 5 T20Is against Bangladesh.
