With Rohit Sharma’s captaincy getting criticism from all corners after India’s poor show in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, it is now being reported that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reinstated faith in the 37-year-old. Moreover, this comes after the senior Indian batter led India to the title triumph in the recently-concluded ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma has been assured by the BCCI that he will be leading the side in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, scheduled to start from June 20 in England. Moreover, Rohit Sharma’s tactical acumen has left the selection committee impressed, handing him an extension in the leadership role.
Rohit Sharma to continue as India’s Test captain for England series: Reports
A source close to the development said, as quoted by The Indian Express, “He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead he Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket.”
Notably, the Mumbai batter’s last outing in Test cricket came in the fourth Test of the BGT 2024-25, after which he dropped himself due to poor run of form. Under his captaincy, India suffered a clean sweep against New Zealand at home, followed by a 1-3 drubbing against Australia in BGT 2024-25.
Earlier, Rohit Sharma himself had clarified that he is enjoying what he is doing with this team, while keeping his availability for near future. Speaking with JioHotstar, Rohit Sharma had said, “Right now, I’m playing really well and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice.”
He also added, “I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open. It’s something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them.”
