The Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah confirmed Indian batting great Rohit Sharma as Team India captain for the upcoming T20I World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. From Australia, the marquee T20I trophy travels to North America for the tournament's 10th edition. In the previous T20I World Cup in 2022, eventual champions England eliminated the Men in Blue after a dominant 10-wicket win in the semi-final.
Since that defeat, the Indian team, under Rohit Sharma, has dominated world cricket but has failed to major ICC trophies. In 2023, India lost to Australia in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup final, extending the Men in Blue's ICC trophy draught.

I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag)."
