Once we won the World Cup, it felt like I got my life back once again: Rohit Sharma

At the launch of a cricket academy in Karjat, Maharashtra, Rohit talked about how important the T20 World Cup 2024 win was. He was quoted as saying, as per India Today, "Our main aim was to win the World Cup. Once we won the World Cup, it felt like I got my life back once again. I am in front of you now, opening this new academy. I can guarantee that the next Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Jasprit Bumrah will come out of here only."

Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team ended 11-Year ICC trophy drought

Following the heartbreaks in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final and the 2023 ODI World Cup final at Ahmedabad, Rohit Sharma finally ended the team's 11-year wait for an ICC trophy. Under Rohit’s leadership, Team India went unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Rohit’s batting performance was instrumental during the World Cup. He played some crucial knocks, including 92 against Australia and an important half-century in the semi-finals against England. However, he got out cheaply in the finals, but other batsmen Virat Kohli and Axar Patel played well under pressure, helping India set a strong target. Despite South Africa needing only 30 runs from 30 balls at one point, India’s bowlers fought back, pulling off a thrilling victory.

After winning the T20 World Cup Trophy, Rohit and Virat both announced their retirements from T20Is. Rohit’s performances in the knockout games earned him a spot in the team of the tournament. Looking back, he said, "We worked so hard for this, and to finally have the trophy feels amazing." In a special moment after the win, Rohit picked up a piece of soil from the pitch and put it in his mouth to remember the place where India’s dreams came true. "I wanted to keep a piece of that moment with me," he said.
