Lahore Qalandars (LQ) have appointed former South Africa player Russell Domingo as their coach for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025. Former England pacer Darren Gough, who became the coach of the side in November 2024 for the Global Super League in Guyana, won’t take the mantle to fulfill ‘unavoidable personal commitments.’ Gough was expected to be with the team for the upcoming edition of the tournament, but the latest decision of his left Qalandars unhappy. However, the team management also added that Gough’s prior commitments are understandable.
"He remains a valued part of the Qalandars family, and we sincerely wish him the very best," said Qalandars in the statement. After Gough’s move, Qalandars have trusted Domingo’s coaching skills to lift the coveted trophy again after two years. The Protea has coached South Africa and Bangladesh in the past. Reacting to his appointment, Domingo expressed his excitement and said, "I am really excited to be part of the Lahore Qalandars for the 2025 PSL season. I can't wait to get to work, meet the players and get to know the management and start preparation for what promises to be an amazingly exciting campaign. We know we will have all the support from our faithful supporters and I look forward to making you all proud in the coming weeks."
Qalandars co-owner Sameen Rana also showed belief in Domingo’s coaching experience and also called him an invaluable asset for the team. "We are delighted to have Russell Domingo join us as head coach for PSL 10. Russel has vast experience at the international level that makes him an invaluable asset for the Qalandars. We believe his expertise will contribute immensely to our team's success in PSL 10," he said.
Qalandars will take on defending champions Islamabad United in the PSL 2025 opening match
The beginning of PSL 2025 will happen with the contest between Lahore and reigning champions Islamabad United (IU), at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on April 11. The United became the most successful team in the league after winning their third trophy under Shadab Khan’s captaincy, after beating Multan Sultans (MS) in the final of the 2024 edition.
Shadab will be leading Islamabad while pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s responsibility will be to make Lahore champions again while working with his team’s new coach Domingo. PSL will be played from April 11 to May 18 and during this period, 34 matches will be played.
