The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) kickstarted after a glittering opening ceremony in Bengaluru. The tournament opener saw defending champions in Mumbai Indians Women take on Delhi Capitals Women in a recap of the final from WPL 2023.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side after winning the toss, invited the Meg Lanning’s DC Women to bat first. Riding on 53-ball 75-run knock from England all-rounder Alice Capsey, the DC Women posted 171/5 in their stipulated 20 overs. But with the likes of Yastika Bhatia, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur, the reigning champions sealed the win by four wickets.
Apart from these key players, it was S Sanjana who hogged the limelight with her last ball six off Capsey. The 29-year-old, who was making her WPL debut came down the track and lofted it clean and high over long-on to win the game for the MI-W at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, video of which is going viral on social media.

Jemimah Rodrigues reacts after DC Women register their first loss in WPL 2024
Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who play for Delhi Capitals Women in the WPL also heaped praise of the debutant for her finish. However, the 23-year-old was disappointed as the result did not end in her team’s favour, she spoke volumes of Sanjana.
“The result was not what we hoped for but what a finish by Sajju the debutant! Comes from a humble background, lost almost everything in the Kerala floods, walks in when the team requires 1 ball 5 runs and hits an effortless six!” the Indian cricketer captioned a post on X, hailing the 29-year-old.
The Mumbai Indians Women will take on Gujarat Giants in their next fixture on Sunday, February 25, while the DC Women will take on UP Warriorz on Monday, February 26.
