The inaugural edition of the SA20 will have a new rule to make cricket more competitive and entertaining. We witnessed captains of MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals - Rashid Khan and David Miller - announcing 13 players for the game ahead of the toss. But why did both the skippers nominates 13 players instead of 11? The real reason is revealed.

This is because of the new rule implemented in SA20, where captains must nominate 13 players before the toss, and after the toss, are allowed to reduce their team size to 11. The two players omitted after the toss will become the substitute fielders.

According to the SA20 management, rules have been designed to improve the quality of the product, the tournament has to offer.

Previously, Big Bash League used the concept of ‘X Factor’, to allow any of the 13 players to enter the field after the 10th over of the first innings. Also, the IPL has introduced the ‘Impact Player’ rule in the 2023 season, which will allow teams to bring in substitute players mid-way through the game.

Another rule that will be followed in SA20 is that no overthrow runs will be deemed legal if the ball deflects off the stumps by an intentional run-out attempt. This novel rule is implemented for positive and attacking fielding, as per the organizers.

The bonus point will also be up for grabs in every game if the team manages to secure a victory with a run rate that is 1.25 times their opponents. Along with four points for a win, the bonus will carry an additional point.

Moreover, no runs will be given to the batting team, if a ‘free-hit’ delivery goes on to hit the batter’s wicket. It will be interesting to see how these rules will have an effect on the viewer’s point of view in the tournament.
