Five days before their opening game, uncertainty still surrounds the selection of the Indian men's football team for the Asian Games. Two separate squads have been announced in a span of 24 hours, one by the Sports Ministry and the other by the AIFF.
The Ministry made six modifications to the squad while keeping the majority of it, which was previously revealed by the AIFF in August. As per the latest updated, players like Sandesh Jhingan and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, along with Lalchungnunga and Chinglensana Singh have also been added into the side.
The AIFF released a revised list for the Asiad making 13 revisions to its initial squad after the India Super League clubs refused to release several of its players.
Indian men's squad for the 19th Asian Games:
Goalkeepers: Gurmeet Singh, Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem.
Defenders: Sumit Rathi, Narender Gahlot, Deepak Tangri, Sandesh Jhingan, Chinglensana Singh, Lalchungnunga.
Midfielders: Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Samuel James Lyngdoh, Rahul KP, Abdul Rabeeh, Ayush Dev Chhetri, Bryce Miranda, Azfar Noorani, Vincy Barretto.
Forwards: Sunil Chhetri, Rahim Ali, Rohit Danu, Gurkirat Singh, Aniket Jadhav.
Head coach: Igor Stimac.
The men’s football team will start their Asian Games conquest on September 19, which is just three days away. The Blue Tigers will square off against the Asian giants, China, in their opening match, who boast of a superior ranking of #80 in the FIFA rankings.
