Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar recently made waves with his comments about MS Dhoni’s role in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Following CSK’s 50-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28, Manjrekar questioned the team’s decision to utilize Dhoni more for his brand value than his cricketing contributions. While Dhoni came out to bat at No. 9 in the game against RCB, the position was uncommon for the legendary finisher. Even after being late to join the team, he struck a scintillating 30* off just 16 deliveries, reflecting his quick batting capabilities.

Nevertheless, Manjrekar doubted the role of Dhoni in the playing XI. He indicated that Dhoni playing for the team is mostly prompted by commercialism. He said, “I still hold my position this season that Dhoni being in the team is more brand value than cricketing value”. “That is the choice CSK has made, he brings in the crowd and has a humongous following," Manjrekar said. While Manjrekar acknowledged Dhoni’s impeccable wicket-keeping skills, he argued that CSK is underutilizing the former skipper's leadership abilities.

He is being underutilized: Manjrekar speaks out about Dhoni’s current role

With current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad still finding his feet, Manjrekar believes Dhoni should take back the captaincy role to maximize his impact on the team. “If MS Dhoni is batting and playing so late, he must be the captain. He is doing well as a wicketkeeper, but he would do more as captain. At the moment, he is being under-utilised," Manjrekar said.

His words have triggered controversy amongst fans and cricket experts. The majority agree that he was justified in asking Dhoni to take up the role of captain, citing his cricketing brains and immense experience as qualities CSK could tap into. Others counter, saying that Gaikwad should be allowed to captain the team and mould himself into a long-term one.
