Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new T20I captain while Shan Masood has been appointed to lead the Test side. The announcement came hours after Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam stepped down from the position in all three formats. Azam took the decision after Men in Green’s below-par performance in the ODI World Cup 2023.
The board took to social media and announced new captains for their side. Earlier, Pakistan journalist Wajahat Kazmi had posted on Twitter, “It seems that Babar Azam will have to resign from captaincy otherwise he would be sacked by PCB. He has an important meeting today with Chairman PCB Zaka Ashraf. Shan Masood likely to be appointed captain for Test & ODI. Shaheen Shah Afridi likely to be appointed captain for T20.”
Azam, who got on the team's helm in 2019, announced his decision of leaving the position on November 15, Wednesday. He said, “Over the past four years, I've experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world.”
The 29-year-old added, “Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It's a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call.”
